Wattscliffe Sandstone

Quarried at Elton near Matlock in Derbyshire, this quarry yields some of the most consistently large blocks in the UK. Some blocks have been over 1800 tonnes in one piece.

Wattscliffe gritstone is uniformly lilac / grey in colour with occasional buff / white intrusions.

This is a freestone and therefore equally durable in the most common masonry applications, which ever way its natural bed is laid.

The Wattscliffe stone is particularly suitable for Perthshire in Scotland and also for Southern Germany, although it would also grace many other areas.

The quarry covers a total area of 2.45 Ha, and is worked periodically either to fulfill a large order or replace stocks.

Minimum stock levels are held at the Chesterfield Site, and delivery of random block is 7-10 days from placing an order.

Typical Block Size: 2000L x 1000W x 1000H

Wattscliffe Lilac Gritstone

Wattscliffe was used to build the Coronation building in Southport in 1926 and more recently in the prestigious Victoria Square development in Birmingham. It was also used along with Dukes Sandstone for the Mappa Mundi Building in Hereford.
