Technical Specifications

Quarried near Barton to the east of Scotch Corner in North Yorkshire.

Swaledale yields a coloured Crinoidal Fossil Limestone of early Carboniferous age. The stone can range in colour from beige through to grey and blue and contains many large fossils. It is dense and takes a good polish, which enhances the fossils. There are several beds of stone and they range in depth from 200mm to 1.2m, but the beds are not well defined and are unpredictable. The largest bed can provide stone from between 380mm and 600mm on bed and blocks range from 2 to 12 ton in weight.

The compressive strength of the Swaledale is very high. Overall this stone should be suitable for use in most aspects of construction including flooring, paving, load bearing masonry, rock armour and cladding, including areas where a particularly long service life is needed.

The quarry is worked periodically by our Northern quarry team, either to order or to replenish stocks. Availability from stock is usually within 7 to 10 days. Please contact our sales office for further details on 01246 554450 or email: tinab@realstone.co.uk.
