Ancaster Limestone

Ancaster Stone - Lambert Factory, Nottingham (Hard White)
Ancaster

Quarried near Grantham in Lincolnshire, this quarry yields three distinct beds:

  • Weatherbed - ideal flooring material which takes a good polish. This comes as a beige and blue mix with many shell fossils.
  • Hard White - has graced cathedrals and prestigious buildings for many years. This is uniform cream in colour.
  • Basebed - not commonly known - this stone is very much like Clipsham limestone.

Ancaster

The quarry covers a total area of 1.4 Ha, and is worked periodically either to fulfil an order or to replace stocks. Minimum stock levels are held at Chesterfield, and delivery of random block is 7-10 days from placing an order. It is possible to deliver straight from the quarry, when it is being worked.

Typical Block Size: 1800L x 1000W x 400H (Limited bed height is 400 from this quarry.)

Ancaster material has contributed to the heritage of many English cities including Cambridge and Lincoln.

BRE have graded Weatherbed and Hard White as C & D type Limestones respectively. Weatherbed is a particularly sought after flooring material.
